A collaboration between Mountain Top Music Center and the Sebago Long Lake Music Festival

Session I

Conversation and Listening

Thursday, July 11, 4:30 – 6:00PM – Mountain Top Music Center,
Conway, NH

$10 suggested donation

Join MTMC director and resident musicologist George Wiese for conversation about musician (and New Hampshire native) Amy Beach (1867-1944.) From child prodigy, to “married woman,” to a life of international prominence, Amy Beach stands out as a musical icon of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Due to restrictions imposed by her husband, Beach cast aside a promising performing career and began self-guided study of composition. She became the first successful American composer not to study in Europe, and her compositions garnered high praise world-wide.

Session II

Conversation and Listening

Thursday, August 8, 4:00 – 5:30 PM – Mountain Top Music Center, Conway, NH

$10 suggested donation

Join MTMC director and resident musicologist George Wiese for a conversation about Czech composer Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904.) From humble beginnings to international stardom, Antonin Dvorak lived a life immersed in music. Dvorak’s compositional style masterfully combines two traditions – symphonic and folk – to create sounds which are at once both familiar and elusive. His music is perhaps the pinnacle of 19th Century Romanticism, resplendent with beautiful melodies and soaring orchestrations. At the same time, by employing folk music, he paved the way for an entirely new idiom to be explored by composers throughout the 20th Century and beyond.
